Monthly Lawyer Profile – Ron Solmer

Why did you become a lawyer?

I was in the middle of getting my Commerce degree when I realized that accounting/finance were not my future. It was about that time that I remembered my debating coach encouraging me to consider a career in law. You would have thought that would have led to me plying my trade in the courtrooms of the land. Nothing could be further from the truth! Having said that I love my work.

What is the focus of your law practice?

Business and corporate law as well as real estate law with a focus on real estate developments.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what profession would you like to attempt?

If I won the lottery (a big one) I would be an orchardist and a philanthropist.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what profession would you never do?

Nuclear physicist. Alas, I’m afraid the brain power is lacking.

Your favourite technology tool?

I actually have two of them. My rolodex and my slide rule (those of you under forty are excused if you have no idea what I am talking about).

What is the first thing you check each morning?

My Blackberry Z10 followed shortly by my rolodex.

What are people most surprised to learn about you?

That is for them to consider and determine.

Your biggest extravagance?

Funding my three daughters’ post-secondary educations in far flung places so my wife Lisa and I can go visit them and explore the cities/countries they are in.

Your favourite food and drink?

Wiener Schnitzel and Kaisershmarrn prepared by my Austrian relatives paired with copious amounts of wine and a shot of schnapps (for my health of course!).

Your favourite motto?

Vivat! (“Live !”)
