Pushor Mitchell is proud to sponsor and welcome Building Black Civilizations: Journey of 2,000 Ships by Ekow Nimako to the Kelowna Art Gallery.

This exhibition continues Nimako’s Afrofuturistic reimagining of ancient African kingdoms. Using LEGO® bricks, he explores the mysterious sea voyage of Mansa Abu Bakr II, ruler of the ancient Mali Empire. Abu Bakr II was an explorer who abdicated his throne and embarked on an expedition across the Atlantic with a fleet of 2,000 ships. Though he never returned, some believe his fleet may have reached the Americas, yet their final destination remains unknown. Nimako transforms LEGO beyond its geometric form to recreate this epic journey, weaving together architecture, historical accounts, and fantastical possibilities.

Ekow Nimako is a Toronto-based, internationally exhibiting LEGO® artist known for crafting futuristic and whimsical sculptures from this iconic medium.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is located in the heart of the Cultural District in downtown Kelowna, B.C., and offers four exhibition spaces featuring both contemporary and historical Canadian art.
