Monthly Lawyer Profile – Lisa Holmes Wyatt

Why did you become a lawyer?

I didn’t know what to do with my Bachelor of Arts degree. One of my friends at UVic wanted someone to write the LSAT with him. I wrote it, did reasonably well, and UBC Law accepted me!

What is the focus of your law practice?

I practice family law. This involves assisting clients with issues that arise during marriage breakdown, including custody disputes, support issues, and division of assets. It includes negotiation and preparation of agreements whenever possible, and going to court if settlements are not reached.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what profession would you like to attempt?

Teaching University.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what profession would you never do?

I could never be that person who washes windows from a scaffold in big cities!

My husband’s Ipad and my Canon camera (I have two favorites!)

What is the first thing you check each morning?

I check my Blackberry.

What are people most surprised to learn about you?

That I have 3 teenaged sons!

Your biggest extravagance?

My annual shopping trip to Seattle with the other female lawyers in our firm – our “Suits and Boots tour!”

Your favourite food and drink?

Food is sushi, and drink is a tie between my morning coffee and my weekend glass of sauvignon blanc!

Your favourite motto?

Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you.
